After attending high school, he continued his education at Hampden-Sydney College where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Virginia and was admitted to the Bar in 1901. Upon admission he opened a law office in Charlottesville, Virginia and began a legal practice which continued for twenty-four years.

In 1916, after having served as Mayor of Charlottesville, he moved to Richmond and resumed his law practice there until 1929 when he moved to Washington D.C. and finally settled in Richmond in 1941. Robinson served as a Captain in the U.S.

Army during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry in action against the German forces on October 8, 1918 near St. Mihiel, France. He retired from military service as a Colonel after receiving the Croix de Guerre from King Albert of Belgium because he had been instrumental in saving thousands of Belgian soldiers during the war and had commanded over twenty thousand American troops during several battles and much of that time with an arm wound that still required him to use crutches almost daily throughout much of the conflict.

Colonel Robinson's activities as an attorney included serving as president of various local civic organizations such as: The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), The YWCA (Women's Branch), The People's Hospital, The Children's Hospital, The Richmond Bar Association, The Bar Association Affiliates Association, The Virginia State Bar Association, and The Federal Bar Association (FBA). He also served as a Trustee for Hampden-Sydney College from 1936 - 1942 where he helped establish a law school for women . Robinson died on December 23rd , 1942 at the age of seventy-three .
